The Text: Luke 4:14-30.
The Clues:
Vs. 14-15
After leaving the
wilderness, Jesus began making his way north toward his hometown, Nazareth. He
worked his way through Judea and into Galilee. Along the way Jesus stopped in
different towns and villages. He taught in the synagogues and performed many
miracles. News of Jesus spread quickly, and he was well received everywhere he
went.
Vs. 16-19
Approximately one year
after his baptism and temptation, Jesus made it back to his hometown, Nazareth.
On the Sabbath, Jesus went to the synagogue. A synagogue was a Jewish place of
worship and Biblical instruction. Having heard so much about Jesus and his
teaching, the synagogue attendant wanted Jesus to read from the Scriptures.
Jesus read from the book of Isaiah, chapter 61:1-2. These verses outlined his
ministry. He had come to help people in distress.
Vs. 20-21
Having concluded his
reading, Jesus handed the scroll back to the attendant and sat down. With every
eye riveted on him, Jesus said, “These verses have been fulfilled today.” These
verses referred to the Messiah. Therefore, what had Jesus just said to these
people?
Vs. 22
Once again, Jesus was
well received, and the people were amazed at his teaching. However, the people
were having trouble believing Jesus’ claim of being the Messiah? Why?
Vs. 23-30
Look carefully at
verses 23 and 24. In your opinion, what has Jesus recognized about this crowd?
In between verse 22 and 28, Jesus spoke 114 words. It would have taken about a
minute. Notice how dramatically the mood of the crowd changed. In your own
words, what did Jesus say, and why did it infuriate the crowd? The congregation
became so angry they tried to kill Jesus. In Luke chapter two, a man named
Simeon predicted that some people would oppose Jesus. Well, his prophecy came
true. Where did Jesus encounter the people who resisted and attacked him? What
can we learn from this?
Okay, you’ve read the
text and considered the clues. Now, it’s time to make your discoveries.
1.
What did you discover about Jesus in these
verses?
2. What
practical lessons did you discover in this story?
3. In
light of what you’ve learned, what step of action will you take?
